Organics

organic.jpgMAFF calculates that there is currently approximately 500,000 hectares (ha) of organic and in-conversion land in the UK. This figure represents 2.7% of the total agricultural area in the UK

This is more than double the figure from April 1999 when there were 240,000 hectares (ha) of organic and in-conversion land or 1.3% of the total agricultural area.

Supermarkets are now offering an increased range of organic products. Health food shops and specialist outlets may have a wider choice, and organic box schemes and farmers' markets are established in many areas., and will show the conventional producers that there is an increased demand for organic products, encouraging them to convert to organic methods.

Other non-food related industries e.g. Local Councils and Golf Courses are regularly using Organic products in many areas e.g. Organic based fertilisers such as Nugro which is a certified product of the Soil Association, or Bio-Groundskeper a fully composted Turkey litter product.

CSC Crop Protection is providing a technical platform for sustainable agriculture and as such are market leaders in precision farming

New techniques in remote sensing of crops, for example by aerial or satellite photography, show promise in a number of areas, notably in the use of infra-red photography to alert farmers and advisers to the spread of crop diseases. Considerable progress in the development of precision farming systems will occur in the next few years. A new means of pin-pointing location using mobile phones and base stations could provide a cheaper alternative to satellite positioning systems. Research is also being done on techniques for the automatic sensing of weeds .

All these techniques allow the manager to respond to problems faster and provide proactive rather than reactive measures of control, using all available options including Organic products.

CSC Crop Protection are committed to developing a full Organic range of products that match our needs coupled with proven results.
